"I call him St. Francis of Assisi because he used to bring in all the strays in the neighbourhood," says the Oshawa musician. Her father died in April, roughly four months after the fire at the Humane Society of Durham Region that destroyed the Oshawa building and killed more than 100 animals there. Hartshorn-Walton says the tragedy "really affected him" and she shares both her father's love of animals and his distress at what happened that day. After organizing two fundraising events for the society early last year, Hartshorn-Walton is making it three with Love Is In The Air, a Valentine's gala, dance and CD launch to benefit the society, featuring live music on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in Oshawa. Whole Note Magazine

Blurb from this months WHOLENOTE... Thank you Wholenote for including our presentation of La Gioconda. Melanie " In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Joseph Haydn’s death, the University of Toronto Opera Division presents Haydn’s Il mondo della luna (1777). The comic story tells of the would-be astrologer Eccitico, who convinces the wealthy Buonafede that he has been transported to the moon. The opera runs November 5-8 conducted by Miah Im and directed by Michael Patrick Albano and Erik Thor. Also in November, Opera By Request, a company whose singers choose the repertory themselves, offers concert performances of Ponchielli’s once popular La Gioconda (1876) featuring Caroline Johnston in the title role with Melanie Hartshorn-Walton, Karen Bojti, Peter Whalen and Melchiorre Nicosia."

Opera by Request

This evening Opera by Request performed Gounod's FAUST. The chorus was the UofT Scarboro Campus Choir, they were fabulous! I love the concerts etc... which are hosted in Oshawa/Whitby. Last night, I went to hear the Oshawa Durham Symphonic Orchestra. Controversy aside, great performance. They performed Don Quixote by Strauss and Beethoven's 7th symphony. (The 2nd movement, brings me right back to music dictation exams at McGill...hmmm?) No pictures as of yet... I will try to add some later.

Me voici!!! J'aime bien les couleurs d'automne. We had a great thanksgiving day. We enjoyed Pingles pumpkin patch as well as the yearly trip through the maze... shaped like a Buick. Then we had lasagna, one vegetarian and the other vegan... and pie... can't enjoy family time without pie. Thanks Laurie for spending the day with us!!! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
